Starting points with honest driving days. Every journey is then designed around you.
7 days
Windhoek, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund. The essential loop, done properly, with two nights in each place so you actually see them. Driving days are kept under six hours.
Day 1
Land, collect your vehicle, and settle in. Evening at leisure in the capital.
Day 2
South into the desert, over the Spreetshoogte Pass with its sweeping views.
Drive: about 300 km, 5.5 to 6 hours. Tar to Rehoboth, then gravel.
Day 3
Enter at sunrise for the dunes, climb Big Daddy or Dune 45, walk Deadvlei's white pan among ancient camelthorn trees.
Note: about 60 km of tar from the Sesriem gate to the parking area; the final 5 km is deep sand, 4x4 or park shuttle only.
Day 4
North through Solitaire, famous for its apple pie and fuel stop, then through the Kuiseb Canyon to the coast.
Drive: about 350 km, 5.5 to 6 hours, mostly gravel.
Day 5
A full day on the coast. Optional excursions: marine cruise at Walvis Bay, Sandwich Harbour 4x4 trip, or the town itself.
Day 6
An easy final drive back to the capital. Farewell dinner in Windhoek.
Drive: about 360 km, 4 to 4.5 hours on tar.
Day 7
Return the vehicle and fly home.
10 days
The Classic, extended north: Damaraland's rock engravings and desert elephants, then Etosha's great game concentrations. Dunes one week, elephants the next.
Day 1
Land, collect your vehicle, overnight in the capital.
Day 2
South over the Spreetshoogte Pass into the Namib.
Drive: about 300 km, 5.5 to 6 hours. Tar, then gravel.
Day 3
Dawn at the dunes, Deadvlei's dead trees, afternoon at leisure.
Day 4
Via Solitaire and the Kuiseb Canyon to the Atlantic.
Drive: about 350 km, 5.5 to 6 hours, mostly gravel.
Day 5
Coast day. Optional marine cruise, desert excursions, or simply the town.
Day 6
Inland past the Spitzkoppe granite peaks toward Twyfelfontein.
Drive: about 340 km, 5 to 6 hours. Tar to Usakos, then gravel.
Day 7
Twyfelfontein's UNESCO rock engravings, the Organ Pipes and Burnt Mountain, and a search for desert-adapted elephants.
Day 8
North to the Andersson Gate and into the park for an afternoon game drive.
Drive: about 345 km, 4.5 to 6 hours via Khorixas and Outjo.
Day 9
A full day moving between waterholes. Okaukuejo's floodlit waterhole after dark is unforgettable.
Note: park speed limit 60 km/h. Plan a full day, not a transfer.
Day 10
Morning game drive, then south to the capital. Overnight Windhoek or evening departure.
Drive: about 430 km, 5 to 5.5 hours on tar. Never drive after dark.
14 days
The full circuit: Kalahari red sands, the Fish River Canyon, the ghost town of Kolmanskop, then the northern highlights and Waterberg. For travellers with two full weeks.
Day 1
Land, collect your vehicle, overnight in the capital.
Day 2
South on the highway into red-sand country near Mariental.
Drive: about 269 km, 3 to 3.5 hours on tar.
Day 3
South to Hobas, the canyon's main viewpoint. Stop at the Quiver Tree Forest en route.
Drive: about 415 km, 5 to 5.5 hours. Tar, then gravel.
Day 4
Morning at the canyon viewpoints, then west to the coast.
Drive: about 375 km, 4.5 to 5 hours. Top up fuel before leaving; stations are sparse.
Day 5
Kolmanskop ghost town in the morning light, the harbour town in the afternoon.
Day 6
A full driving day north. The scenic D707 gravel route is an option for the confident.
Drive: 465 to 600 km depending on route, 6.5 to 8 hours. Plan the whole day.
Day 7
Sunrise dunes, Deadvlei, and a slow afternoon.
Day 8
Via Solitaire and the Kuiseb Canyon.
Drive: about 350 km, 5.5 to 6 hours, mostly gravel.
Day 9
Coast day at leisure, with optional excursions.
Day 10
Past the Spitzkoppe toward Twyfelfontein.
Drive: about 340 km, 5 to 6 hours.
Day 11
Rock engravings in the morning, then north to the park for an afternoon game drive.
Drive: about 345 km, 4.5 to 6 hours.
Day 12
Full-day game drive eastward across the park toward Namutoni.
Note: about 135 km inside the park; treat as a full day of game viewing.
Day 13
Exit the Von Lindequist Gate and south to the Waterberg Plateau.
Drive: about 380 km, 4.5 to 5 hours on tar.
Day 14
Morning on the plateau, afternoon return to the capital. Evening departure.
Drive: about 307 km, 3 to 3.5 hours on tar.
